Looking Forward

Updated: Jul 30, 2023

Current progress on Salty Seas is focused on refining the game based on playtest feedback and implementing more efficient systems. In late July I overhauled the boat system so that the child boat classes spawn specific ship pieces based on schematics. I also refined collision under our system so that boats will not intersect with shoreline (or be pushed away too fast). Barrels and cargo boxes now use this system as well. Additional ocean elements have also been added to simulate tides around islands and large currents.

However, all of these elements are better versions of existing game mechanics. Let's discuss what new features will be added. Over the next month, I will finish refining the UI, and implement different parts of the port so that the game feels more comprehensive. When fully finished, the port will have three sections:

  1. The Tavern: this allows players to interact with characters and accept contracts for to complete. This replaces the old system which assigns all contracts based on each level.

  2. The Docks: this allows for the trading of cargo, and is what the port UI looks like in version 2

  3. The Shipyard: this takes advantage of the revised boats. Here players can upgrade pieces of their ships and add/remove parts to create their intended boat. (this asset won't be worked on until the current core system update is complete)

In addition to the currently available pieces of hardware, Shipyards will utilize new ship parts still in development:

  • Fire Cannons: these cannons will set targets on fire, requiring effort to extinguish

  • Mine Droppers: these sit on the back of the boat and release explosive barrels behind them

  • Tow Line: Can be used to attach other boats & drag them along, unlocks new contracts

  • Crane: Used to explore the bottom of the water and retrieve items from shipwrecks

  • with more ideas to come

The larger world will also become more expansive as development progresses. For instance, adding navy forts the player can flee towards in order to escape Pirates. Behavior of the Pirate and Navy boats will also become more advanced, such as Pirates chasing players towards a second Pirate vessels. There is also the potential for additional factions such as ghost ships. These vessels will wait, hidden under the waves until players approach. Marine life, both hostile and neutral, could also be added.

All of these are dependent on the completion of the August Core Update, but I will continue to work on this game and develop it further.
